School is finally out and freedom is on the other side of the door. Summer is the most appealing time of the year for teenagers all around the US. No more homework, no more slaving under the scrutinizing eyes of teachers, no grades to worry about, and more time to do whatever we feel like. As a sophomore, summer is definitely, without a doubt, my favorite part of the year. Apart from the psychological attraction to summer, the warm dry days and cool clear nights definitely give summer a sense of physical attraction as well. Getting past all that, summertime is the liberation from the stress that accumulates during the school year.

The daily schedule can be divided into three parts: Summer school, the afternoon, and nightlife. Even though I sought refuge from school, it continues to haunt me throughout my summer vacation in the form of summer school. This option is much more bearable than normal school given that it’s only 4 hours. It’s the summer and the teachers don’t want to be in school just as much as the students. Their classes are fun and far more laid back, it’s an easy “A”.

Summer school is over soon enough and the afternoon rolls by. This time of the day is more passive, but I am not implying that it’s more boring. Unless we go to the beach, it’s far too hot outside for us to be productive. Most of the afternoon I spend hanging out at my friends’ houses planning what we should do. After having spent more than half a year in school, just not having to go is paradise itself; the teachers are replaced with t.v’s, homework with comic books and hard plastic desks with comfortable couches. School takes a lot of people and now that we are given such a huge time to rest, our friends just seem much livelier. We would spend most of the day just talking, the topics varying from school to romance. Whatever the topic, each was just as interesting as the next and previous.

Nightlife is the highlight of summer vacation. This is the time when everyone wakes up and gets out. It doesn’t matter where we go, just getting out of the house to stay away from the norm is good enough. One reason I really enjoy nightlife are the activities. Now that there isn’t any school work to be worried about, the streets are always busy because going out during a weekday is no problem. Going to see movies on opening night, going to restaurants, and parties are a few of the many options that are available during summer vacation.

The best part of summer is the time that I can spend with my friends. Summer is the time to make new friends, renew friendships that have lay dormant during the school year, or just continue adding onto existing friendships. All the time that is spent together helps. During the school year, the most we can ever do is help each other with homework or maybe catch a movie once in a while, but with the abundant time allotted to us, we can see each other more often and spend the time doing what we want and not what we are forced to do.

During summer is the only time a high school student can really let loose and enjoy the time given. The time away from school and the time spent with friends and family balance out the stress and hardships that students have gone through during the school year.
